How to become a Highly Qualified Instructional Assistant

Instructional Assistant Requirements:

Instructional Assistants must meet one of the following standards to be considered highly qualified in the
State of Michigan:

      ● Completed two years of college (60 hours) OR

      ● Obtained an Associate's Degree or higher OR

      ● Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of an approved formal state
          academic assessment in the following areas:

           ○ Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or
           ○ Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and
               mathematics readiness, as appropriate.

Current State Board of Education Approved Assessments

      ● College Board’s SAT – Score at least a 480 on evidence-based reading and writing and a 530 on math

      ● ETS Parapro Assessment - A passing score of 460 is required

Information on the ETS Parapro Assessment

The ETS Parapro Assessment is offered by Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor (269-927-6173) and
Southwest Michigan College in Dowagiac (269-782-1462).

Test Center Appointments: The test fee is $55. Some test centers may charge an additional fee to test at their location. Contact the test center directly for more information about fees, preferred payment methods, and to schedule your test session.

Candidates should allow a minimum of 3 hrs. for signing in/testing and will need to show a valid Driver’s License or State ID when signing in. Candidates will receive an unofficial score report upon completion of the exam, official results will be available 2-3 weeks after testing has been completed.
